Wonder how often people with this birthday have problems filling out electronic forms, did the programmer think about a day that only occurs once every four years? According to an article I located on www.al.com, the date is the rarest birth day with about 1 in 1460 chance of being born on this date - guess these people should play the lottery. The are about 5 million people out of the 8 billion people on the plant that are considered leaplings, if you don't like to celebrate birthdays this would be a good day to be born. The outdoor motorcyle racing season starts this week, so my schedule is about to get busy. Enjoy your spring and hopefully you like whatever weather Mother Nature tosses your way.

The first image this month, also the mobile phone background, is from the Oklahoma City National Memorial. This is one memorial that I feel provides a wonderful tribute to those who lost their lives on a fateful day April 19, 1995. This image was captured at sunrise, during a return home from a spring break trip with my childern a few years ago. The memorial is wonderful to capture images during sunrise, sunset or night time - make sure you spend a little time in Oklahoma City and visit this gem. Camera Data: 40mm 1/50 sec F8 ISO800

Traditionally the Daytona 200 motorcycle race is the last weekend of Bike Week in Daytona Beach FL every year. Generally it seems like someone has a flawless race and appears to be way out in front of the pack. Last years Daytona 200 motorcycle race did not disappoint in close finishes, the seven racers shown here finished 0.439 seconds apart, two of the riders near the finish line were penalized for infractions earlier in the race, including the rider who crossed the line second. Similar to the 24 Hour of Daytona, the rider winning this event earn a Rolex watch. Camera Data: 200mm 1/2500 sec F11 ISO1600

Here's a link to download the appropriate version of this month's image for your desktop, one for standard screens and one for wide-screens along with a Mobile Phone Image. Mother Nature has been throwing curve balls to most of the US so far this winter, here in Illinois we had a nearly a week of below zero temperatures. Thrown on top of those temperatures was snow, rain, ice, fog and very little sun. After a few snowstorms and starting to see some accumulation that we expected to see for some time, the warming trend returned, and this past weekend and previous week was foggy and more fog. On a positive note, this past weekend was the Daytona 24-hour car race, which is the start of race season here in the US, at least races held outdoors. While I was not able to attend this year’s event, from the TV coverage I was able to see, it appeared a very large number of people did make it to the sunshine state and the race had great weather for the fans.

Our first image this month is from this past weekend, with some fog hanging over the Great River Bridge connecting Burlington IA and Gulfport IL with highway US 34. This unique design was completed in October of 1993 and replaced a bridge that was built around 1918. While the bridge was being constructed, there was the Great Flood of 1993, with some of the highest stage levels ever recorded at that time. The previous bridge was the only option to cross the river between the Quad Cities and Saint Louis. Since the new bridge has been opened, the record flood level in the area was eclipsed in 2008, when the river crested near 22.5 feet, for reference near this location, flood stage is 10 feet and currently the river stage is at just under 4 feet. Strangely, the railroad bridge in the distance is the third to be built, the first one being constructed in 1868 and at the time was the first all metal bridge to cross the Mississippi River. The current railroad bridge was completed in 2011, after a Coast Guard study found the previous unit was struck often by barges, since the crossing is a major artery for the Burlington Northern Railroad, a redesigned structure was installed. First Image Camera Data: 50mm 1/125 sec F13 ISO200

We stay in the same area of Burlington IA but this time we are across the river in Illinois at my go to location for American Bald Eagles during the winter. Earlier in the week the Army Corp of Engineers estimated over 700 eagles in the area, so it was a chance to see many eagles. The weather forecast indicated fog for most of the morning, so I slept in longer than normal to allow the fog to dissipate. Mother Nature had other plans, when I arrived at 10:30am the fog was the best I would see for the next 6 hours. Once I was out along the river, the fog was getting thicker and thicker to the point I could not see halfway across the river. When I first arrived, I could barely see the trees on the Iowa side of the river but there were many eagles in the area, but it was hard to see with all the fog. This bird was able to capture some breakfast, and this was only one of four eagles I took pictures of during the day. The fog started to lighten up with the higher winds in the afternoon but was never great for capturing photos of the eagles – landscapes were a different story. Can't win them all, maybe next time. I hope everyone had a good holiday season and is ready for the new year. 2023 was a great year with ups and downs of life, overall I can not complain as it was an adventure. This new year appears to be similar to last but that's just based on initial discussions with clients. As the old saying goes, 'Don't count your chickens until they're hatched', we will not be expecting work to fall into our laps and we will continue to find new clients and old clients with new work needed. If anyone needs some photography services, let me know.

Would like to say thank you to everyone who asked questions or requested images in the past, if anyone has any suggestions or problems with the newsletter or desktop images, let me know and I will assist you.

The first image of the year is a portion of Emmons Glacier from the Northeast side of Mount Rainier, taken back in August of 2023. The amount of scaring is incredible, while I can not provide you exact details of size, just think of how large they may be since this image was taken from about 3 miles away - the trees in the foreground are a few hundred yards away. According to the National Park Service website, "Emmons Glacier has the largest area of any glacier in the contiguous United States" and "Mount Rainier is the most heavily glaciated peak in the contiguous United States". A couple of facts I did not know before visiting Mount Rainier NP, first is that there are 28 major glaciers in the park plus technical climbing skills with glacier knowledge are required to travel on any glacier above 10000 feet - guess I might need to get some training completed before my next trip to Mount Rainier. Camera Data: 200mm 1/800 sec F9 ISO200

Our second image is a common sight in the Eastern half of North America, a Barred Owl - they are year-round residents and have small territories. I have not been able to locate the nest of this particular bird and rarely see it but commonly hear its call. Another resident of the area is a Great Horned Owl, which preys on Barred Owls and its chicks. This image was captured shortly after sunset last January and I was lucky to spot this wonderful bird, who was more than willing to let me take a few images until I left it alone to return to its evening hunt. Camera Data: 560mm 1/160 sec F5.6 ISO6400

Here's a link to download the appropriate version of this month's image for your desktop, one for standard screens and one for wide screens along with a Mobile Phone Image. Can you believe we are entering December and nearing the start of 2024? This year was full of highs and lows for me, I can say a larger number of highs and a few lows and as I look back at the year in photos, there are numerous trips that I have yet to truly review images. Honestly, this is not abnormal, personal photography trips typically are pushed to the side and one day I will have enough material to spend a month reviewing and processing images. Overall I am happy with my results from 2023 and look forward to producing even better images in 2024 for my clients.

I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season and if you need any last-minute gift ideas or have any special requests, send me a message and I will see how I can assist you.

The first image this month was captured one year ago near York, Maine, one of my favorite locations and lighthouse - Nubble Light. During my trip last year, I was hoping for snow but Mother Nature was not cooperative on this particular trip - maybe next time. Some readers will recognize this image, last January there was a similar capture but that was captured around sunset and this image was 30 minutes later, so the lights on the buildings are easily seen in the darker conditions. You may notice, there is also a reflection theme continued from the past few months and this is our Mobile Phone image this month. Camera Data: 27mm 1/13 sec F8 ISO800

Back in October, PBS presented a film by Ken Burns titled The American Buffalo. According to the PBS website, the film is "The biography of an improbable, shaggy beast that has found itself at the center of many of the country's most mythic and heartbreaking tales." While I have read numerous accounts of bison in North America, I learned a great deal from this four-hour series, it is actually two parts, and would highly recommend this to anyone interested in the history of the US. In honor of this film, here's an image of a bison in Yellowstone National Park, from this past August. This guy was coming up a hillside along the road, I happened to be stuck in a "bison-jam" sitting in my car but was lucky enough to be in a great location and his eye was framed nicely by the grass. Camera Data: 200mm 1/320 sec F8 ISO800

Here's a link to download the appropriate version of this month's image for your desktop, one for standard screens and one for wide screens along with a Mobile Phone Image. Personally, the last 35 days have certainly had challenges but like everything in life, you get knocked down, stand back up and dust yourself off. When we think our life is going bad, an event like the one last week in Lewiston, Maine puts things into a whole new perspective. This one hit a little closer to home since I have been in the region, Maine is not a state I think of with gun violence and currently have friends and family within 90 miles of the shooting locations. Never a good situation and wish I had answers to help our great country end senseless killings.

For those keeping track at home, we have had images with reflections in them since July of this year, so let's carry on the theme with another one. A couple of months ago we were out in Washington State, so how about Washington DC this time? The first image was taken in front of the Lincoln Monument, looking across the Reflection Pond at the Washington Monument, shortly before sunrise. It's a much longer story but I had forgotten my tripod a few hundred miles away, so I had to improvise with various items to create a support structure for the long exposure. Our mobile image utilizes this view in a vertical format. Camera Data: 24mm 2 sec F11 ISO1600

Our next 'action' image is half landscape and action, this was captured about 4 weeks ago at Indiana Dunes National Park. I have been to the park a few times but was always short on time, so I made sure I took my time and explored areas I had not seen previously. The rangers at the main visitor center were very helpful giving me suggestions, which I visited nearly every stop mentioned. Realized on this adventure how spread out the park is, with a few isolated sections to explore with diverse areas from West to East. This image was captured on my return to the beach area from one of the harbor lights on a breakwater wall, lucky for me Lake Michigan was fairly rough to create some tall waves and splashes on the rocks. Camera Data: 200mm 1/3200 sec F8 ISO800

Here's a link to download the appropriate version of this month's image for your desktop, one for standard screens and one for wide screens along with a Mobile Phone Image. Luckily I have been able to avoid both so far, which is good as last month was very busy for me. Able to attend four different motorsports events, located in four different states plus visit some other locations for wildlife and landscape images. Based on my traveling, appears fall colors are going to be mixed this year as trees are already dropping leaves or producing muted colors - hopefully some vivid colors present themselves before all the trees are barren. Racing season is nearly complete and ice hockey season is upon us, so a change of photography views will be a nice change for a few months.

Our first image this month will continue the theme of reflection from last month, this one being from Schwabacher Landing, near Grand Teton National Park, with a small branch section of the Snake River providing a nice mirror. If you look closely at the left side of the image, breaking up the reflection of the Teton mountain range, you will see the downstream section of a beaver dam. Luckily the beavers in this section stopped swimming around shortly before sunrise, so I was able to capture this image with calm water. For those long-time readers of my monthly update messages, back in October of 2018 I presented an image of a bull moose with the Teton mountains reflected in the water, close to this same location, just further downstream a few hundred yards. The mobile phone image is based on this view. Camera Data: 20mm 1/5 sec F10 ISO200

For the second image this month, we will stay with the reflection theme but not nearly as clear due to the wind and my feathered friend searching for food. This is a Great Blue Heron from Spring Lake near Manito Illinois. I had plenty of patience on this day, spending about one-hour creating images of this bird but never obtaining an image of a meal capture nor an attempt - I was able to observe the bird taking a bath along with Mute Swans doing the same. A very nice relaxing afternoon, even if the temperatures were in the low 90's. Camera Data: 800mm 1/1250 sec F8 ISO1600

Here's a link to download the appropriate version of this month's image for your desktop, one for standard screens and one for wide screens along with a Mobile Phone Image. Luckily I have been able to avoid both so far, which is good as last month as very busy for myself.

If you look closely on the left side of the image, breaking up the reflection of the Teton mountain range, you will see the downstream section of a beaver dam. Luckily the beavers in this section stopped swimming around shortly before sunrise, so I was ble to capture this image with calm water. For those long time readers of my monthly update messages, back in October of 2018 I presented an image of a bull moose with the Teton mountains reflected in the water, close to this same location, just further downstream a few hundred yards.

I actually had plenty of patience on this day, spending about one hour creating images of this bird but never obtaining an image of a meal capture nor an attempt - I was able to observe the bird taking a bath along with Mute Swans doing the same. Very nice relaxing afternoon, even if the temperatures were in the low 90's. Camera Data: 800mm 1/1250 sec F8 ISO1600

Here's a link to download the appropriate version of this month's image for your desktop, one for standard screens and one for wide-screens along with a Mobile Phone Image. So my apologies to those who did receive the email as this is a duplicate/resend.

Can we say summer is over or should we wait until end of this month? The summer was nice and mild for a long time but it decided to hit most of the country with long duration heat wave, hopefully all readers are safe, along with their family members and friends. As mentioned in previous updates, this has been a very busy year and this past month just added to the stories to be told. Personally I had driven to the West coast once as a teenager taking a family trip, we drove to Los Angeles and San Francisco and this produced some great memories. The only other time was with my wife and son (he was 2), when we made our way to Oregon, into Washington and ultimately to southern Alaska. One memory that I did not retain was the length of time it takes for that type of adventure, that all changed in August. In the previously mentioned trips, there was more than one driver and this helps tremendously, I was not so lucky for the majority of my trips.

In total I made three different trips, first one started in South Dakota, moved to Wyoming for Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, then to Washington State with a stop in Mount Rainier NP before heading for home. I was home for about 16 hours - long enough for laptop drive cleanup, oil change and laundry. Then I was back on the road to Pennsylvania for a weekend job and then a few days later back into the car for a weekend trip to New Hampshire - I can say this is my first time driving to both coasts in one month. For those who get jet lag, I actually drove all four mainland time zones over 3 days, not something I want to try again soon. For those thinking about how many miles were driven on these trips, in total it was around 9432 miles from August 3 to August 28 - it didn't look so far on Google Maps! Our images this month will span across our great country from one coast to the other, hope everyone enjoys our images this month.

Our landscape image this month is from Mount Rainier National Park in Washington state, this was my first visit to the park so my visit was part figure out the layout but also determine good times for photos. Prior to leaving I did some research on locations for sunrise, sunset and poor weather locations; while I did some research on trail closures, I failed to check on road construction. The day after my arrival, the park road that connects the two popular locations was closing for the week and this would mean if I wanted to shoot sunset in the Southwest corner of the park and sunrise in the Northeast corner of the park, there could be nearly an hour longer drive. Did not help that I was camping in the Southwest portion of the park. This image was my first sunrise location in the park, not too bad for not scouting the location before I arrived 30 minutes prior to sunrise. Camera Data: 19mm 1/13 sec F11 ISO100

The second image for this month is a group of Common Loon's moving from location to location last Sunday morning, looking for their breakfast (before I had mine). This morning in New Hampshire on a small lake was extra special as there were a total of eight birds together for most of the hour I spent taking images, one of the birds seemed to be joining the others off and on plus I did not witness any aggressive behavior among the group. While this image only has five in the frame, I liked how the water reflected the various items on shore as the Loons swam past. Shortly after this, Mother Nature started a little rain drizzle to add a little fun to the mix. Common Loon's do not breed in the state of Illinois, actually they do not breed in many US states, so I am not totally familiar with the changes from juvenile to adult. I know from locals near the lake, the mating pair did have one chick that survived this year and I believe the first bird on the left is the young one - based on its bill coloration being different from the others. Hoping everyone and their loved ones were able to deal with the temperatures best as possible in their situation. Ironically for myself, this past weekend was the coolest, temperature wise, I experienced over the past few weeks. The month was very busy, with three trips to the East coast and a few locations in the Midwest. August will be busy with long road trips planned and hopefully some great images to share next month. There is not one but two Supermoons this month, a rare astronomical feat when the moon is a full stage but also very near it's closest to us in orbit, the Supermoon tonight (August 1) is the second in a row but also one of four in a row! Contrary to what you might read on the internet, a supermoon exceeds the disk size of an average-sized Moon by up to 8% and the brightness of an average-sized full Moon by some 16%. You may not perceive the difference in size, but a supermoon will appear brighter in the sky.

Those who know me, you have most likely seen me support local charties as a volunteer in some way but most of the time providing my photography services - a trait passed on to me by a mentor named Kevin May. Normally my work is isolated to Central Illinois but occasionally I will help others and recently one group really caught my attention in the motorcycle dirt track world. While I have known this group for some time, named Evil Hours Racing; including the founder Erik Hartley for a few years - back when he first started the organization, to be honest I provided basic images for Erik but never really asked what all the organization fully did. Erik is a military veteran and his goal was to help other veterans deal with PTSD in some form of racing experience, this could be helping a team or even help them become a racer. Ever since I met Erik, he had one message that has stuck with me: PTSD is NOT a disorder - this was something that I never really thought of very much but makes complete sense, even more so when you know a war veteran of any age and hear stories about what they experience day to day and night to night. Recently, an individual who Erik had helped became a statistic that none of us want to see or hear about. For those who follow me on social media, you would have seen the post I made for this individual.

While I don't like to request individuals to donate to any organization, I would like to make a general plea for everyone who reads this newsletter (please forward this to anyone who might be or know a veteran). If you are able, please make a donation to an organization supporting your veterans of your country. If you want to learn what a small group is doing, please visit the website of Evil Hours Racing: https://www.evilhoursracing.com/post-traumatic-stress-support

Both of our images will have connections to my information about Evil Hours Racing in some manner. The first image is our Lady Liberty, which did you know actually is on New Jersey side of the Hudson River, is a universal symbol of freedom and democracy and was a gift from the people of France arriving in New York in June of 1885 packed in 214 crates. This image was one of those long time planned shots but not working out as planned, I was hoping for sun after the early morning alarm. This image was captured at 5:10am in early July, with cloudy skies but worse off, it was a two hour drive from my event the day before (not sure if I am crazy or dedicated) - maybe next time I visit there will be more sun and less clouds. Camera Data: 200mm 2 sec F8 ISO800

The second image this month is one personally love to capture at the Peoria Motorcycle Club's TT track but not for the faint of heart, shortly after capturing this view, the bikes are less than two feet to my right arm - I really put my trust into these professional flat track racers (again, not sure if I am crazy or dedicated). The part that I love is the reflection in the helmet face shield; the curvature of the shield makes the fender appear very thin. Camera Data: 400mm 1/1600 sec F5.6 ISO3200

Here's a link to download the appropriate version of this month's image for your desktop, one for standard screens and one for wide-screens along with a Mobile Phone Image. Most of the Midwest is dealing with low rainfall levels, so hopefully we do not have any issues with fires due to the dry conditions - not a good combination was we are looking at Fourth of July in a few days, let's hope everyone is sensible in their celebrations. Those people who follow me on Social Media have seen a large amount of motorcycle racing images, current contracts have me traveling around the country for a couple of different series and keeping me very busy every weekend. Hopefully I will be able to see some firework shows this year and give me a new moving object to capture images of - if you are in the US, get out to your local fireworks and enjoy the show.

To add some color to your desktop this month, we will give you a mid-July bloom of the Lemon Queen Sunflower, this particular grouping was sitting next to a rural road and I had to stop to capture the wonderful colors. While this plant is not the large sunflower most people think of, it's a wonderful little plant that attracts many different bugs and birds while in bloom. Camera Data: 20mm 1/500 sec F4 ISO200

Let's celebrate the United States Independence Day all month long with this fireworks image. This was captured in Peoria IL, upstream from the downtown launch location. Every year I attempt to find a different location to capture the Red, White and Boom Fireworks. Do you have a favorite fireworks that you enjoy, let me know so I can add it to my list of displays I need to capture. This is also our mobile download image this month for your mobile phone.
