The image this month was taken last winter, in very cold and windy conditions, the shot was taken next to the Peoria Civic Center with City Hall just out of view to the left of the image. It took a few attempts to get the moon and clouds like I was hoping to capture, I was hoping for a wind from the north to capture a better American Flag.
The image includes one of most unique building structures in Peoria. The Twin Towers opened to residents in May of 1984, after four years of battles at City Hall. The Palace Theater had to be demolished but G. Raymond Becker had a plan on bringing people back to living downtown. Becker was about the only developer working in Peoria during the 1980’s when the 300 foot towers were completed. The unique part of the towers is that they are residential, with one or two bedroom apartments and condominiums. The apartments currently have a waiting list and the condominiums are 3300 square feet or one floor with windows all around to see the city, about 125 total units between both towers. The official name of the residential towers is Twin Towers Place. When the towers first opened, the unoccupied floors did not have floors, walls or plumbing – so you had to design the floor plan for your new home.
The adjacent building to the towers is commercial space, with a shopping mall on the ground floor and office spaces on the top three floors. At one time there was a small gym operating on the roof with a running track, tennis court and basketball court, I am not sure if that still exists. Below the complex is a 2 story parking deck designed for 400 cars.
The building in the back left of the image is the Becker Building, which was completed in 1993. The building between the towers is the Commerce Bank building which was completed in 1920.
Lately I have been shooting mostly ice hockey but have made a few trips to Starved Rock State Park looking for unique ice shapes and I hope to make one more trip for bald eagles before they head north for the summer.
Hopefully you are staying warm if you live in Central Illinois and hopefully you learned a little about Peoria this month.
