The image for this month was taken a year ago, during the annual Wildlife Prairie State Park’s Bison Grounds Blessing. I receive numerous questions from people asking if I receive special access in the park for my pictures, normally I do not but this month’s image was the one occasion when I did. I was truly honored to be invited to witness the release of the bison from the winter pasture to the summer pasture. In this image is a Native American named Spotted Thunderhorse, a good friend of WPSP, honoring the bison and the bison’s ancestors for providing resources for generations. The bison are like kids getting released to recess at school, once the gate is opened they are off and running to the 'playground'. I always assumed bison were more little cattle, fairly slow moving, docile and not graceful in difficult terrain. Attending this event and viewing of bison in Yellowstone last fall has changed my opinion of these animals forever. I have seen the videos of bison att acking cars previously but to see how powerful and how well they climb steep slopes is just amazing, it's no wonder Native American's have respected them for generations. Native American's would gather all their needs from the bison - food, clothing, shelter, tools and medicines. Also Native American's would only "take" the number of animals needed to help them survive and sustain life. One can only hope and dream that all humans could have the same respect for our Earth and all the resources provided to us.
In last months update I informed you about a charity event for Easter Seals called ‘Three Little Pigs Make the Great Escape’, I would like to thank anyone that attended or donated to the event. The event was a big success and raised around $35,000 - what a night! Congratulations to the event organizers for doing a great job. Hopefully the owner of the Murray Baker Sunrise framed print that I donated is happy also.
For those wanting to visit Wildlife Prairie State Park, Saturday April 3rd is the Giant Easter Egg hunt for ages 1-2, 3-6 and 7-12. The first hunt is at 11am and the second is at 1:30pm. It is incredible how fast the kids pick up the 12,000 eggs filled with candy and surprises. I believe the Bunny Breakfast on Saturday and the Brunch on Sunday are full but you can call the park to confirm (309-676-0998). The annual Bison Grounds Blessing will take place at 10am on April 10th. There is an entrance fee to the park for non-members.
Most people are thrilled with the return of spring, I have mixed emotions with the exit of winter and arrival of spring. Does not matter which you prefer either, get out of the house/office and visit mother nature a little more this year.
