This time of year is not my favorite, I love winter for many reasons but as spring arrives we seem to have more ice and freezing rain than we really need. It makes for great images but travel can get dangerous. One negative reason for me is the Bald Eagles migrate back North, while a positive is the water falls come back to life, the transition from frozen water to liquid water is always fun to record. It can be dangerous, as some area's remain icy until temperatures really warm up and the large sections of ice can fall without much warning. It would be interesting to capture some of the falling ice but from a distance.

The primary image this month is from Starved Rock State Park, located in Utica Illinois, shot last weekend in St.Louis Canyon. I actually shot photo's in five canyons during my half day trip but this one overall was my favorite. In the spring and summer it's always interesting to see where water escapes from the rock, but in the winter you see even more locations as the slow moving water freezes and builds up over time. The interesting area of the main waterfall is how the flowing water has carved out the front face, the middle area never freezes since the water is always flowing.

The secondary image this month is from the Le Claire Iowa area, from a couple of weeks ago. Remember I always say to have a camera with you - on this occasion I needed to travel to Iowa City for an event, I left a little early so I could hopefully capture some Bald Eagle images at the Lock and Dam there. I only spent an hour there but I used my time very carefully to help capture some bald eagles in action, hopefully you will enjoy this image.

Last month I mentioned about a snow storm ready to coat the area with a large amount of snow, the weather people were on top of this storm as we received 15 inches of new snow. Overall the road crews did a very good job clearing the roads, I am sure without much sleep for a couple of days. I am sure Mother Nature has at least one more snow storm for us before spring officially starts. The first two month's of this year have been very interesting with the weather, we have experienced rain, freezing rain, lightning, snow and even snow thunder twice. Snow thunder is very strange to hear and can be very different from thunder experienced with rain storms, it's something you need to experience as putting the feeling into words would be very difficult.

If you have not been to my Shopping site lately, you may want to stop by and look around. I recently updated images from various State and National Parks, in addition to various other subjects and I will be update soon with additional bald eagle and water fall images over the next month. Follow the link at the bottom of this email.

Here's a link to download the appropriate version of this month's image for your desktop, one for standard screens and one for wide-screens. Right click on the text for the format you need and select Save As, save to a location on your computer that you can remember and change the background as needed for your OS.
