May was such a busy month on my schedule that it's easy to see how I just realized we are nearing the middle half of the year. Disregarding any photography in the area, my road travels started with the final two games of Southern Professional Hockey League President's Cup in Roanoke VA. A couple of weeks later I was in Maine and then this past weekend I spent three days in Lexington KY. This month will have three additional out of state photography events, at least there will be one weekend at home! This summer will most likely be the busiest schedule to date in photography for clients; it would be easy to complain but this is something I have been working hard to achieve.

Our first image this month is from Cape Elizabeth, Maine; it's Portland Head Light at sunrise. I arrived early to hopefully capture the low angle of light coming across the top of the water surface. The first lighthouse at this location was first lit in January 1791 but this location had been used since 1776 with soldiers keeping watch to warn citizens of British attacks. There are numerous forts built in the area with armed fortification used up to World War II. Sharp eyed viewers will notice in the distance another lighthouse, Ram Island Ledge Light Station - it's a stone & brick lighthouse that started operation in 1905 and is still active today but now utilizing solar power for the light. Camera Data: 16mm 1/640 sec F8 ISO800

The second image is from one of my must visit locations in York Maine, Nubble Light on Cape Neddick. Normally the lighthouse would be the focus of an image this month but on this foggy morning there were numerous visitors to the area when I was capturing images. Traditionally I will shoot sunrise or sunset at this location but the fog was holding back the sun and this image was captured around 2pm. The one drawback to this time of day, numerous people and with that comes people who are not making best decisions. When I was taking images of the lighthouse I was moving all over the rocks shown in the image and then a family came to the area, just left and out of frame, with bread to attract the sea gulls. Since I was concerned about bird droppings, I decided to keep an eye toward the birds but might as well use the opportunity for unique images. If my plan was to shoot images of the birds, I would have used different lenses. As you will see, the birds were very close. Camera Data: 70mm 1/1600 sec F8 ISO400
