Every year I say something about it's hard to believe the end of the year is here already but I can honestly say that this was a long year for my photography adventures. Spent more time on the road with my cameras, including more airline flights, than ever before. Not to say I did not have a great deal of windshield time, driving out to the NorthEast three times and two-thirds of the way to the Pacific Ocean. Hoping everyone had a wonderful year and are looking forward to 2023.

We are going to avoid the traditional snowy landscape image, with a warm sunrise shot from Olympic National Park during my October visit. This view is looking toward Puget Sound, with downtown Seattle about 75 miles away. Last month we shared the salmon and beach scenes, so basically we started around 6000 ft of elevation here to near 0 ft on the beach, all on the same day. Camera Data: 16mm 1/800 sec F13 ISO800

Once in a while I make a decision to photograph something, I might be thinking it would be fun or good for historical data but I could also not feeling it; being fine if I did not even go to the location. One spectacle I have wanted to shoot for many years is the Sandhill Cranes migration in Nebraska. A couple of weeks ago I noticed some images on social media of Sandhill Cranes and started doing some research on locations, discovered some of the images I was seeing were from Indiana. How could they be so close and I not know about this, I have looked into numerous photography options in Nebraska and the Platte River is a much longer drive than a few hours to my neighboring state. A little more research and I found Jasper-Pulaski Fish and Wildlife Area in Medaryville, IN, with a few thousand Sandhill Cranes reported to be in the area (over 32k to be more exact). Knew I wanted to witness sunrise with these wonderful birds, so it was a long drive in the middle of the night to be there. While driving I thought about some of my previous encounters in Wisconsin with this species, the sound of so many birds would be worth the experience even if I never captured a single image - I was right on that part. I also managed to capture an image or two, so here's an image taken about an hour after sunrise of a group taking off to find food. Camera Data: 560mm 1/2000 sec F11 ISO3200
