Last month I mentioned I had been shooting at Starved Rock State Park, so this month's image is from one of the trips I made this year. The image is from Kaskaskia Canyon, located in the eastern side of the park, it was shot from behind the ice falls looking back into the canyon. The height of the cave area is around 5 feet tall, so I had to kneel down to shoot this image. This was the first time I had actually gone behind ice falls into a cave region; the ice was solid so I was not concerned with the ice breaking. I am curious how deep the water is in the cave area but don't believe I will be checking into the depth of the water anytime soon. Kaskaskia Canyon does not seem to have the number of visitors that the western and central located canyons receive, which is good and bad. Good for those of us who enjoy the solitude of nature and bad for the other visitors of the park that never see some wonderful areas. A long term project of mine is to shoot every water fall and cany on in at least 3 of the 4 seasons.
Starved Rock State Park is one of the most popular locations for tourists in north central Illinois, receiving 2 million visitors in 2009. The park is well known for the rock formations, mainly sandstone, and the 18 canyons. In the spring almost every canyon has a water fall, but in the summer there are only 3 or 4 canyons that consistently have water falls. The park and surrounding area is full of history, with an estimated 5000 years of continuous human use. If you visit the park in the winter or early spring, use extra caution while hiking since the packed snow and ice can be dangerous while walking the various trails.
At the end of March I will have a print included in a silent auction for a fund raising event for Easter Seals. Last year the event rose over $25,000 and they are hoping to top that amount this year. The event is called ‘Three Little Pigs Make the Great Escape’; it will take place March 27th at 6:30pm at the Great Escape in Peoria. If you would like to attend or make a donation, contact Helen Chadwick at 309-692-2265 or via email at hchadwick241275@PROTECTED – limited tickets are available for the event.
