Another month gone by and welcome to a change of season to Fall. Fall and Winter are my favorite seasons, so I am always excited when the weather starts cooling off at night. The past month has been busy, with high school sports, harvest time and great weather so I am out and about all the time. Even squeezed in a weekend trip to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park with three other photographers, we had a great time and came back with some wonderful images. Expect to see some in the future, just not this month.

This month's image was shot last fall at Matthiessen State Park, located just south of Starved Rock State Park. It's much smaller but similar in geology to Starved Rock and is visited by far fewer people, most likely since people don't know much about the park. There are four waterfalls and one cascade that are very easy to see, depending on water levels, there are only 5 miles of trails so it's an easy hike for part of a day and there is less elevation gain/loss as compared to Starved Rock so even kids have an enjoyable time. Depending on how much I photograph, I will shoot some at Matthiessen and then head over to Starved Rock for a canyon or two - nice way to spend a day.

From the IDNR website on the history of the park: Matthiessen State Park was named for Frederick William Matthiessen, a prominent industrialist and philanthropist from LaSalle. He originally purchased the land near the end of the 19th Century and developed it as a privately owned park for many years. Mr. Matthiessen employed about 50 people to construct trails, bridges, stairways and check dams. The area was originally referred to as “Deer Park,” in reference to the large deer population. The original 176-acre park consisted primarily of a long narrow canyon with a small stream flowing through it. At that time these formations were called “dells,” a name that has stayed with the park. After Matthiessen’s death, the park was donated to the State of Illinois, which opened it as a public park. In 1943, the state renamed the park in honor of Matthiessen. Since then, the park has grown to 1,938 acres and includes much of the significant natural areas along the main dell, some former prairie land, and some forest land so uth of the original park.

This month's image is from the cascade called the Giant's Bathtub, hope you enjoy the image and have a great month. Here's a link to download the appropriate version of this month's image for your desktop, one for standard screens and one for widescreens. Right click on the text for the format you need and select Save As, save to a location on your computer that you can remember and change the background as needed for your OS.
