First of all I would like to say that my thoughts and prayers are with everyone in the Midwest and Southeast, the month of April has not been kind. I have talked with a few friends in Georgia, so anyone that I have not talked with I hope all is well. The month of April has not produced any truly bad storms in Central Illinois, but we have more than our share of rain and clouds. As usual, the Illinois River is well above flood stage and farmers are waiting to get in the fields to plant this years crops. So welcome to the month of May.

The primary image this month is for all the mothers out there, it's a collection of flowers from around the country. Most of them were shot in Central Illinois, some in my yard even, but hopefully everyone enjoys the variety.

The secondary image this month is dedicated to the wildlife at Wildlife Prairie State Park. The month of April was not kind there either, a bull Elk named Darwin had to be put down and the Alpha female wolf Marta was found dead of natural causes the second weekend of the month. Darwin was 17 years old and Marta lived to be 13 years old. For each animal I decided to display an image that is a close-up and show some of their unique markings and also some of the last images I captured of them. The image of Marta on the top left is an image I shot in February of this year and it is the last image I have of her, the close-up was shot 2 years ago this month. Marta had a very noticeable scar below her right eye that made it easy to identify her within the pack. While I was not present when her body was removed from the enclosure, I was told the pack provided a suitable tribute 'howl' for her. The lower left image of Darwin was shot last spring and the close-up was taken during the a nnual round up last November. The round up is an event where the bison and elk receive shot's and general inspections from a vet, that's why he is located in a chute system - he was next in line. You will notice Darwin does not have a normal set of antlers, many years ago he and another bull were fighting over the females and Darwin was injured and has not grown a proper set of antlers since. One amazing fact is the elk antler can grow an inch per day and the set can get to be around 40 pounds in weight!

Here's a link to download the appropriate version of this month's image for your desktop, one for standard screens and one for wide-screens. Right click on the text for the format you need and select Save As, save to a location on your computer that you can remember and change the background as needed for your OS.
