Tim Lester Images Monthly Update
Another month gone by and Mother Nature is toying with the Midwest once again. While I type this it's about 48 degrees outside, big difference from mid 90's we had 5 days ago.
June is a busy month, for the astronomy fans out there there are a few events next week. On Tuesday morning in the US, earlier morning risers will be able to view a partial lunar eclipse. Then the following day there is a transit of Venus across the face of the sun. The transit of Venus is one of those rare and momentous spectacles in observational astronomy that you absolutely don't want to miss, find a local astronomy club for details. Individuals in the Peoria area, the Peoria Astronomical Society will be holding a special observing session at Lakeview Muesem. The transit starts around 5pm, for reference the last one occurred in 2004 and the next one will be in 2117.
The first image this month is from Saguaro National Park in Tuscon Arizona. The image is from sunrise in the Eastern section of the park, the park is actually divided into a couple of sections with Tuscon sitting between the two. There is plenty to do at the park, with over a dozen different types of cactus in the park, numerous hiking trails, various mountain ranges and abundant wildlife - there is something for everyone.
The second image this month is from the Peoria Speedway, shot during one of the All-Star National Dirt Track Series races last year. Chris Carr (4) and Sammy Halbert (7) battle for the win in the main event in this image that was shot in the last corner on the last lap with Chris Carr taking the win. One of his many race wins in the Peoria area, he was nicknamed "Prince of Peoria" for the win streak he held for many years at the Peoria TT National. Chris won a record 8 times in a row, with a total of 13 National Main Event wins at the track. Eight consecutive track wins is the current record in AMA Grand National Dirt Track racing.
