Welcome to the month of February, hopefully for those in the Northern Hemisphere you are staying warm and everyone in the Southern Hemisphere, we hope you are enjoying your summer. The weather in the Midwest has been very wild this week, one day was like a summer day with rain where we thought we might need to build an ark then to snow the next with a 46 degree temperature drop in less than 36 hours. In Central Illinois, we experienced 8 days above 50 degrees - really strange for January. As I type this newsletter, the temperature is in the single digits with -10 wind chill. Tomorrow morning when the kids are heading off to school the temperatures will be around -2 degrees.

The first image this month is from Starved Rock State Park in Utica IL, the selected image is from Ottawa Canyon shot a couple of years ago. This year we have not had the cold weather nor the water for the water falls to create the ice like this image. While it is wonderful to see these ice towers, they can be very dangerous when the warmer temperatures arrive. People don't seem to respect the weight of ice in the outdoors. If you are near ice falls be aware of ice breaking away and falling. If you have a chance and the area is safe, spend some time looking at the ice and color of the light from different angles.

The second image this month is from the Mississippi River near Gladstone IL, shot on New Years Day. The weather was very cold but I happened to find a good concentration of Bald Eagles. There was a group of nearly 100 and they were very active until a few groups of Pelicans showed up. Believe it or not but Bald Eagles seem to be afraid of Pelicans and start leaving the feeding area when Pelicans fly in. I have seen this the past few winters, it's still a little strange seeing Pelicans in the winter. There are so many things I love about the image I selected, from the talon shadow on the head to the damage on the leading edge of the right wing and various details in the feathers.

Some individuals might be receiving this newsletter for the first time and wonder what this email is about. If you have inquired about images or purchased products from my one of my websites, I have added you to the email list as you will probably enjoy the content we produce every month. At the beginning of every month, we select a few images and create desktop wallpapers, we usually have a landscape image and a wildlife or action image for you to use on your computer for the month.

Hope everyone enjoys the images this month and if you have any questions or comments send them my way.

Here's a link to download the appropriate version of this month's image for your desktop, one for standard screens and one for wide-screens. Right click on the text for the format you need and select Save As, save to a location on your computer that you can remember and change the background as needed for your OS.
