Welcome to May, before I go to far, I would like to wish all Mothers a Happy Mothers Day this month. Didn't I talk about Mother Nature unleashing storms near the end of each month during last months update? Two weeks ago she decided to share some severe weather with most of the country, hopefully everyone survived without too much damage. While the West and North was treated to snow, most everyone else received rain, in Central Illinois we were provided with 4-7" of rain in 2 days! The Illinois River crested at 29.35 feet in Peoria, breaking a 1943 record of 28.8 feet, flood stage starts at 18 feet.
The large amount of rain caused problems all over the area, including destruction of roads and railroad lines. A large number of people learned how powerful water really is - a sink hole on a road in the Chicago area took three cars. I have not heard the actual numbers but I believe rail service was disrupted for over 50 miles around Peoria. No home was safe from this storm either, if you lived near a creek or river then your house was surrounded by water very quickly and numerous homes had 3-5 inches of water in their basements - they were not even near streams! I have heard numerous stories of storm drains filling up and back flowing into homes; I have heard rumors of sewer lines also back flowing into homes. Water alone is not good but coming back from the sewer is not something remotely fun to deal with.
Lastly, after 31 years of continuous ice hockey operation the AHL announced on April 18th "The transfer of ownership of the Peoria Rivermen franchise from the St. Louis Blues to the Aquilini Investment Group, owners of the NHL’s Vancouver Canucks. No determination has been made relative to the operation of the franchise for the 2013-14 season." What will happen in Peoria is still unknown at this time, hopefully we can lure another professional ice hockey team into town.
Hopefully everyone enjoys the first image this month, it's a rural sunset from early last month. While selecting this image, I told myself that I really should get out and shoot more of these images - if it was only that easy to get the sun and clouds to cooperate. Sharp eyed viewers will notice horizontal lines along the horizon, those are high voltage power lines with the towers out of view.
The second image this month is dedicated to all the mothers reading this (really all parents), I present a Mature and Immature American Bald Eagle. The Mature Eagle is actually feeding the Immature, one of the parents will bring a fish to the nest and they will pull meat from the fish to feed the young Eagles. This Immature Eagle is less than 2 months old in this image, not even flying yet. The nest shown is one of three that this particular pair of Eagles have used over the past 8+ years. What's truly amazing is that normally Eagles produce two eggs, with one of the pair surviving and taking flight from the nest. This pair has produced three eggs in 3 of the past 5 years and I believe at least two of the young have survived each time. This years eggs have hatched in the past few weeks and we will see how many of the three young Eagles survive this year.
Hope everyone enjoys the images this month and if you have any questions or comments let me know.
