Can you believe 2013 is half over already? This month we are not going to talk about Mother Nature and the destruction she has been involved with - maybe she will stay quiet this month if we don't talk about her. Last month was really busy as we had a family vacation scheduled; we headed West for some wonderful outdoor experiences. I thought they were wonderful but certain family members may disagree - I can say everyone had a good time overall. So for the next few months you can expect to see numerous images from Colorado and Utah. In total, we visited 11 National Parks and National Monuments! While reviewing images, attempting to decide what to show first, not an easy decision, in the end I have decided to display the trip backwards, so stay tuned over the next few months. Most of our locations were very good geology lessons, as the land experienced a wide range of changes over the past million years.

We are starting with Great Sand Dunes NP in Southern Colorado. They have the tallest sand dunes in the USA, just don't visit in June - it's one of their peak month's for wind and you get sand blasted while walking around! Not great for camera gear either. We had hoped to 'sand sled' the dunes but the wind changed that plan. The image for this month was shot from Medano Creek, while it looks dry it is wet to the touch and you can dig down about a foot to find water. Since it's wet, it is much cooler than the sand which get's very hot during the day. The cloud formations just above the dunes is actually smoke from the Windy Pass Fire and West Fork Fire that had started a few days before we arrived. At one point driving home, while in Southern Colorado, we could look in every direction and see smoke from numerous active forest fires.

The second image this month is from Fourth of July fireworks in Peoria IL, this image was from the Red, White and Boom celebration along the riverfront. We are lucky in Central Illinois as we can experience fireworks in numerous towns in the area and actually watch them in Peoria twice. Once at Glen Oak Park on July 3rd, with a wonderful concert from the Peoria Municipal Band before the fireworks and then on July 4th along the riverfront. When I feel really adventurous I will actually attend both of the Peoria shows - this year I have not decided where I will be watching and shoot a few images, maybe a small town show this year. Happy Fourth of July to all of my US friends!

Hope everyone enjoys the images this month and if you have any questions or comments let me know.
