After the wonderful weather Central Illinois enjoyed last month, we had a couple of interesting twists - like Mother Nature likes to do now and then to keep us on our toes. First, after the cool weather a large number of trees thought fall was here and started changing colors and dropping leaves. Then we were able to enjoy hot and humid weather once again, with temperatures in the upper 90's and high humidity - I was really hoping that was over.

The first image this month is not from Mesa Verde National Park, which we highlighted last month. This ancient dwellings are from Canyon of the Ancients and Hovenweep National Monuments, which happen to be near Cortez CO also. Both of these National Monuments are in Colorado and Utah and require some driving to different locations to see all of the ruins. While you have to get off paved roads to see all these parks have to offer, they are well worth the drives and hikes. Make sure you stop by each Visitor Center, they can provide tips to find all of the locations and will offer suggestions if you don't have the proper vehicle to reach the locations - yes there are some rough roads to travel on.

The second image this month is from the Indiana State Fair, I traveled over there for the AMA Grand National dirt track race. The Indy Mile is a classic flat track race known for high speeds and close races - this year had the high speeds and close side by side racing. Once the racing had completed and I was getting ready to leave the track I noticed these rides and their wonderful lights. After a few experiments, I found that an 8 second exposure provided a nice set of light trails for a few of the rides. The main 'circle' of lights is not a Ferris Wheel, it's actually a ride that spins around with cars on both ends of a long arm. The next challenge was to obtain an image with multiple rides moving at the same time - that just took some patience!

This has been a very last few weeks, with following the AMA Dirt Track series around to a few different tracks in the Midwest and this weekend I am shooting the Rock Island Grand Prix. It's one of the premier street circuit go-kart race events in the U.S., with drivers from all over the world attending. Numerous Indy Car and NASCAR racers have started their careers with go-karts and most likely raced in Rock Island.

I have been exploring various Social Media applications for some time now and I am starting to use them. So if you have a favorite Social site, you can connect with me also - for the various sites I currently use visit my About.Me page here: http://about.me/timlesterimages

Here's a link to download the appropriate version of this month's image for your desktop, one for standard screens and one for wide-screens.
