Happy April 1st to all of my readers around the world, wish I had a good April Fools joke but I do not. Hopefully the images this month are not considered jokes and that you really enjoy them as much as I enjoyed capturing the moments in time. I am sure Mother Nature has some wonderful weather in store for everyone this month, so let's hope she is kind to everyone.
With the first image this month, we have basically completed our journey of National Parks and Monuments from last years trip, so enjoy a little view from Rocky Mountain National Park. The image this month was taken at Dream Lake with Hallet Peak in the background and Flattop Mountain on the right. The hike to reach this location is fairly easy, that is my opinion but I am sure my wife would disagree, it's a 2.2 mile round trip with 450 elevation gain and reaching a little over 9900 feet. For reference, Hallet peak reaches up to 12713 feet - that would require a little more distance and time to summit! The hike to Dream Lake starts at Bear Lake, which is a very popular destination in the park, so if you plan on visiting get up early to make sure you get a parking spot as it fills up quickly in the morning with cars from hikers. Once the parking lot fills up, you must use the park bus system and be on their schedule. Make sure you check with the park rangers regarding the cond itions around Bear Lake before you leave, during our June visit we hiked in snow and even had to cross a snow bridge to reach this location.
The second image is a well known hockey player but not everyone knows her name, it's Shannon Szabados. While you might not recognize her name, you might know her as the Canadian Womens Olympic Ice Hockey team goalie. She not only helped her team to win the recent Sochi Olympic Gold Medal but also Gold at the Vancouver Olympics. The Edmonton native has been making strides in promoting females in hockey for over a decade already, she's only 28. She was the first and only female to play in Western Hockey League in Canada, she is the first female to play in the Southern Professional Hockey League where she is currently playing for the Columbus Cottonmouths in Georgia. Shannon also played in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference for 5 years, winning an ACAC championship with the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology last spring. While she is only the 6th female to play on a men's professional hockey team, she knows her chances of reaching the NHL are nearly impossible due to her age - she did practice with the NHL's Edmonton Oilers earlier this year. From watching her in practice, she is very capable of playing with the men as she is really skilled as a goalie - she is probably in the top 15% of all goalies in the SPHL. I expect she will be playing in Columbus again next season. I was lucky enough to get some images of her while the Cottonmouths were in Peoria playing the Rivermen in the first round of the SPHL Presidents Cup playoffs, Columbus ended up beating the Rivermen so the Peoria team is done for this season. Hopefully the Rivermen can do better next year when they return for a second year in the SPHL.
