Welcome to the month of October, normally a wonderful month of color in the United States with the fall season. Seems like the fall color really started early this year and I guess we should expect the white stuff earlier than later. Hopefully my friends out West are surviving with the recent snow falls. This morning, Rocky Mountain National Park closed Trail Ridge Road after 3 foot drifts were found in the West and East sides of the mountain range. This month images are all about long distance travels, by water or road and track.

The first image this month is from a foggy start to the day a few weeks ago in Peoria Illinois. Tied up to the dock along the Peoria Riverfront are the Pinta and Nina - both are Columbus Replica Ship's, with the Nina promoted as the most historically accurate Columbus replica ship ever built. These boats are floating museums; they are traveling around 10 months of the year. If you have not toured these ships in person, you really need to - it's amazing how small these ships are and tough to imagine the distances traveled by the crews. I was lucky enough to climb aboard the Mayflower II in Plymouth Massachusetts earlier this year - another must see small ship.

Visit http://www.thenina.com or http://www.plimoth.org/what-see-do/mayflower-ii for more details on these ships.

The second image this month is for my wife for a couple of reasons; it's related to how we first met and began our travels around this country together. October is our wedding anniversary and 20 years ago I was fortunate to win two(2) regional motorcycle racing championships, she has been a part of my racing since the middle of 1989. My racing took us all over the Midwest with races every 2 or 3 weeks from April to September. The picture in the background is from my 1994 season; yes I was one of those 'crazy' racers who put their knee on the ground.

While we don't mind flying, we have only flown together one time; normally we travel by car around this great country. Based on mileage we have put on our vehicles, I would estimate we have logged between 75,000 to 100,000 miles together, this included a 6 week journey across the US and up to Alaska - you have to get along really well for that amount of drive time! Prior to having kids, we used to visit our friends in the Northeast; normally in the fall and had wonderful times seeing fall colors from Illinois to New Hampshire. We have many more trips planned, so the mileage will continue to go up - K, Happy Anniversary!

Hope everyone enjoys the first image this month and hopefully you don't mind the personal 'memories' image for my wife. If you have any questions or comments let me know.

Here's a link to download the appropriate version of this month's image for your desktop, one for standard screens and one for wide-screens. Right click on the text for the format you need and select Save As, save to a location on your computer that you can remember and change the background as needed for your OS.
