Can you believe this is the last month of the year? Does not seem like Christmas is a few weeks away. The month of November was filled with events for myself, some good, some bad and a little unique. The most unique was an Ice Hockey game that was postponed in the second period - if you have ever seen a professional hockey game, you know there are injuries in every game. It was not an event for the squeamish, so I will not go into the details of the injury, let's just say a player was cut by a skate. Like most hockey traditions, his team waited until he was released from the hospital a few hours later and the team travelled back to Alabama on a long bus ride. The player will most not likely play again this season, but hopefully he will be fully recovered next season.
The first image this month is for my friends the Martel family who lost an important part of their family a few weeks ago. Carol Martel passed away on November 18th too early in her life. She loved the coast along the ocean, so I felt an image from the Maine coast would be appropriate.
While it's not a Christmas tree, we named this the 'Buoy Tree' from the numerous lobster trap buoys hanging from the branches. We found this location while kayaking one afternoon during high tide, it appeared the buoys were captured from the branches; we later discovered they were placed on the branches by someone. To obtain this sunrise shot, we had to leave by kayak for a 30 minute trip while it was still dark. You will hear photographers say they have moments of magic light, this shot is one of those. While taking numerous shots from various angles, the sun was coming in and out of the clouds and this was one of those magically moments when the sun lit up the exact spot I needed. Would love to say it was planned but sometimes it's good to be lucky.
For long time followers of the monthly newsletter, the second image this month will not be a shock. It's winter time and American Bald Eagles will be travelling south for the winter. Almost every state within the United States have Bald Eagles at some point during the year, make sure you get out and see them in your area. If you need locations near you, let me know and I can provide some resources to locate them in your area. While we have a few dozen Bald Eagles in the Peoria area during the winter, I normally spend more of my time along the Mississippi River along the Illinois and Iowa borders. Sorry to say but the colder the weather the more Bald Eagles will be heading south - it's a guessing game on how many you will see but if you dress properly the experience can be unforgettable.
