Last month I may have spoke a little soon about the weather, seems like most of the United States received more precipitation in February than any month prior during this winter season. I know everyone living or traveling in the Northeast are ready for winter to be over. I like snow but they have entirely too much on the ground and based on the snow we are receiving as this moment, it's only going to get worse for them. This time of year is always very busy for me and ice hockey is the main focus of my time. A couple of weeks ago I shot a College Division 3 tournament over 3 days, this included 2 different levels that started with 12 teams. When it was all over I had shot around 6000 images and did not get much time to sleep but it was all worth the time and effort based on the images captured - some of these games are final hockey games for the seniors. It's rewarding when they see the images and let me know how much the images mean to them since it's their last game - for some it helps them forget about elimination in the tournament.
The first image this month is from an old farm near Edwards IL, a small rural area West of Peoria. This image was captured after a small snow fall, hopefully it brings a little hope for less snow and melting of the existing snow as Spring slowly arrives. The barns in this image no longer actually house farming equipment, as this farm no longer harvests crops or have livestock. Unfortunately most of the smaller farm operations in the area are becoming housing developments as urban sprawl continues in the Peoria area, it's amazing to see these old barns and think about the effort required to build them during an age without power tools.
The second image this month was taken during the MACHA College tournament I shot a few weeks ago. I always seem to find a favorite image when I shoot sports for various reasons, this one helps show one of the challenges of playing goalie - various sticks attempting to disrupt the puck path. The position of goalie is by far the most difficult position in ice hockey, while the physical demands are tough, the mental demands are even greater. The goalie shown here is Thomas Place of Marquette University and he made the save on this shot, he also helped Marquette win the MACHA Silver Division Championship one day later.
Here's a link to download the appropriate version of this month's image for your desktop, one for standard screens and one for wide-screens. Right click on the text for the format you need and select Save As, save to a location on your computer that you can remember and change the background as needed for your OS.
