Tim Lester Images Monthly Update
Happy 4th of July to all of my US based friends, enjoy the fireworks and travel safe if you are on the roadways. For those outside of the Midwest, please send boats of any shape and size! June is officially the wettest month on record for the State of Illinois. The airport in Peoria recorded over 11.5 inches of rain in June alone, 3.5 inches is normal, they recorded 16.6 inches in May and June combined. It's amazing the Illinois River is not higher, it's still a few feet below the 2013 flood level.
The first image was shot last Saturday night, after shooting an Easter Seals outdoor event - which was cut short due to an approaching storm. I left the event and did a little internet search of weather sites looking to see the lightning patterns. Based on the quick research I headed 20 miles north of Peoria to a Wind farm area. In the past I have shot images near the wind towers, this time I decided to shoot toward them, so the red lights you see near the bottom of the image are the wind towers. You can also see some of the towers in other area's of the image along with a large amount of rain falling from the clouds. I actually positioned myself between a couple of storm cells, so I either had lightning in front of me or behind me, a few times I took shelter in the car based on the rain and winds. This image was shot around 11pm, there were others I captured that did not have any lightning in the frame but the area was lit up like it was day time - a wonderful light show fro m Mother Nature.
The second image is from Peoria's Red, White and Boom celebration July 4th 2014. This shot is from a parking deck looking toward East Peoria and the Illinois River. For those not familiar with Red, White and Boom, the fireworks are shot from a barge on the river so at certain angles it can appear to be coming from downtown roof tops. This year will be interesting since the river will still be well above flood stage - hopefully they can safely have a good show for everyone in the area.
