It's hard to believe there are only two months left this year! For myself the month of October was a blur - the first couple of weeks was spent traveling and photographing the Southwest, this was a little vacation that packed a large number of locations into a short amount of time. After 4200 miles of driving, there are a few thousand images from 19 locations to review and process - small price to pay after experiencing some of Mother Natures handiwork, visiting ancient remnants and meeting individuals from around the world.
The first image this month is from a hidden gem in Albuquerque NM - Petroglyph National Monument. I had been to Albuquerque a few times previously and had no idea this National Park Service site was within the city limits. Probably the biggest surprise was to find the volcanic rock left from lava flows 200,000 years ago. Another interesting fact is the dark surface on the lava rocks is actually a varnish coating. Native people chipped away the rock's coating to create drawings that have lasted thousands of years. In addition to the native people sketches, more recently from the past few hundred years you may find various cultures leaving their marks. While visiting the various sites, it's fun to make your own guess about what the various drawings are showing but since there is no written record it's difficult to say if you are right or wrong. The other burning question, what tools did they use and how did they make them?
The second image this month is from an area outside of Page AZ, it's a couple of Great Horned Owls in a slot canyon located on Navajo Tribal lands. I spent half a day traveling to a few select lesser known slot canyons in the hopes of capturing some really unique images. These locations required hiring a Navajo guide who drove me to each one plus provided information and lead the hikes in each canyon. Due to recent storms that had closed the canyons down for a few days, my guides knowledge of the area was a great resource to have available. The slot canyons I had selected are not the normal tourist locations, so numerous owls frequent them - in total we were able to see and observe four different Great Horned Owls - the pair in this image being the best surprise.
Hopefully everyone enjoys this months selection of images, if you have questions or comments send me an email.
