Wow, I can hardly believe we are getting ready to start a new year and I have no idea where the year has gone - it's been a very busy year! Now that it's December, I am looking forward to the Bald Eagles to start arriving along the Midwest rivers - unfortunately it has to start getting much colder for their arrival. Normally with the December calendars I offer everyone a discount on products from my website, this year we are offering something a little different. The first image this month is not snow - while it may look like it, this is actually White Sands National Monument located near Alamogordo NM. This image was taken on a remote hiking trail in a little window of sunshine before rain started falling. This evening was very windy which made pitching my tent a challenge and while storms were surrounding the area but I was lucky to have no rain and a little sun before I packed up for the evening. A little known fact, the white sands dunefield is an active dunefield and the dunes move from west to east as much as thirty feet per year. The dunes are an interesting study of moving sand, plants attempting to survive and animals looking to beat the odds of the desert. Make this a stop next time you are in New Mexico - make sure to bring sleds to enjoy the dune hills without the cold of winter.
The second image this month is Kyle Rank, goalie for the Peoria Rivermen hockey team. Kyle was the Southern Professional Hockey League's Goaltender of the Year for the last two seasons and plays big for his small size - most professional goalies are well over 6 foot and Kyle is about 6 foot tall with his skates on. While he is an excellent goalie, his small size will keep him from moving up into the higher professional leagues. The SPHL is on the low end of the professional hockey leagues but the ticket cost's are low also, so it can be an inexpensive family night to see future hockey stars in action. No big surprise based on the name but most teams are in the Southeast of the US, Peoria IL being a long distance road trip for most teams in the league.
