January 31st 2020

Hello to Leap Year February, where we use the calendar to align with our actual rotation around the sun - if you did not know, the earth takes 365.24 days to fully orbit around the sun. So while leap day is not exact to make up the 0.76 days, it's really close and we will forget about the extra 0.04 days since it takes 25 years to make that one full day - we make that up every centurial year where we skip leap day. The year 2000 was a centurial year but the scare of Y2K over shadowed the fact of skipping February 29 tha ...Continue Reading

Can you believe we are in the month of December already? This year has flown by and we will be enjoying the start of a new decade and the new year 2020 in a few weeks. A couple of winter storms are traveling across the US, so if anyone is traveling home after the holiday, hopefully you travel safely.Last month, the first image of Reflection Canyon was the primary objective of the adventure. Would like to apologize for the delay in this months images, it's been a long couple of weeks and I am still not home - actually was home for 8 hours for a short nap, unpack the car, pack a new bag and drive up to northern Michigan. Hopefully images captured over the last couple of weeks make up for the delay. The first image is the main reason for the recent adventure, a location known as Reflection Canyon - this is one of those spots where tourist's and regular hikers will not visit since it's a backpacking trip.  ...Continue Reading

October 31st 2019

Hopefully everyone is looking forward to this months newsletter and calendar images but let me explain something first. I am currently on a two week photography trip in the Western US, so during preparation for the adventure I made sure I had images for November. Images were selected and saved on a drive, except I saved them on a drive other than my laptop. The larger problem was my template files for the calendar and website were not copied to my laptop - so basically I made a big error. Unfortuately with my trave ...Continue Reading

Hard to believe that we are in the last quarter of the year. Last week was officially the start of fall, which a few weeks ago I was starting to see leaves changing on tree's - sadly I believe this year will not be great for color, let's hope that I am wrong. Later this month I have a trip planned to Colorado and Utah, so next month I should have some stories and photos to share. The first image is Bearhat Mountain in Glacier National Park, with Hidden Lake in the foreground. Bearhat Mountain's namesake is a little ...Continue Reading

The last newsletter I mentioned having a long road trip coming up, that trip was to North and South Dakota. While visiting those states I had the pleasure of creating images in Badlands National Park, Theodore Roosevelt National Park, photograph three different motorcycle racing events during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and finished the week with a music fundraiser for Easter Seals. It was a very long week but I had a great time and met great people along the way.The past week the motorsports world suffered a ...Continue Reading

The second half of the year has started and happy to say the Midwest has been mild this summer - realize I have just created a heat wave to strike soon! We have experienced a couple of weeks of 90 degree heat days and I recall one day having 111 degree heat index! Overall it's been good and I am not complaining at all. Have a week long road trip coming up and hopefully will have some good images for you next month - if I get some spare time to shoot. For my friends around Central Illinois, if you like live music wit ...Continue Reading

June 30th 2019

Anyone realize the year is half over? That was a quick 6 months of 2019 - for those of us in rural Midwest, the month is hard to tell based on farmer crops. Normally corn is getting tall but based on the rain this year and late crop planting, some of the corn plants are less than 12 inches out of the ground. While driving to an event this weekend I actually witnessed a farmer in Indiana just now planting! Appears this year is going to be rough on the farmers, which could translate into food problems for some of us. ...Continue Reading

Mother Nature continues her fun from last month - I thought the phrase was April Showers brings May flowers, if that is true then it must still be April. The amount of rain we have been receiving is probably like the Pacific Northwest, but we have been lucky enough to see the sun on most days. While looking at river level predictions, I learned there are 623 water level gauges for NOAA and National Weather Service in the state of Illinois - over 100 are above flood stage. For the month of May, the Central Illinois area ...Continue Reading
