It's now May and I might have placed a curse on the Midwest with my April showers last month - here in Central Illinois, the Illinois River was just under 17 feet yesterday. It's been raining so much I might need a boat, the prediction is the river level to be over 25 feet in a few days. Guess that explains the flood warnings for the past few days and over 8 inches of rain for the month.

Generally there are April showers, which allows for May flowers - so here are Sunflowers. Hoping this helps stop the rain as we are good for some time! So the story on the Sunflowers, I had shot photos at a car race in Wisconsin and the next day had a few hours to kill before my next stop. While looking at maps for various locations that might allow for some good photos for wildlife or scenic, I started driving to a wildlife refuge. A couple of miles before the refuge I found a few fields of Sunflowers, it was windy so it took some patience to get the flowers to stop moving and take a few images before the wind picked up again.

The end of April and May is playoff time for professional ice hockey in North America, hockey playoffs is very intense for everyone - players, coaches and front office personnel. Hockey is about the only sport I can think of where the rules are 'bent' by the officials, the players are allowed to do more than any other time in the season. This creates a level of confusion for the casual fan watching but longtime fans understand - it's the playoffs. The second image this month is from the Peoria Rivermen's second round SPHL playoff's against the Huntsville Havoc, here you can see some of the chaos that occurs in front of the net. Another unique part of hockey, when a non-goalie player has their helmet knocked off during play, they keep playing. For goalie safety and maintain their good looks, they do stop play when their helmet comes off.

This year the NHL was shocked again when the Chicago Blackhawks were shut out in their first round with the Nashville Predators. Here closer to home, the Peoria Rivermen lost their SPHL President Cup Championship battle with the Macon Mayhem.

Enjoy the images.
